7 things you didn't know about me blog hop

i've been tagged by the talented and lovely Fiona at http://yabookcase.blogspot.co.uk/ . the point of the blog hop is to post 7 random things about yourself...here are mine:

1. i'm a vegan turned carnivore. after being vegetarian for the better part of 15 years and vegan for 2, i found the lifestyle just wasn't supporting my body and mind. though i'm a picky picky carnivore and only eat organic/free range/preferably pastured meat and eggs. no dairy. no wheat. yeah, i'm loads of fun!

2. i'm an avid knitter and novice yarn spinner. i love knitting gifts for people, but mostly knit cutesy items for myself.

3. i'm a total 'hippy mom' (hence the veganism...it just made sense). i had two drug-free births, nursed both of my children for years (and am a big proponent of breastfeeding awareness). Even now, at 6 and 8, they still often end up in our bed at night and i wouldn't have it any other way.

4. i'm recovering from a traumatic brain injury, which totally flipped my life upside down last year. one day you're sweeping the back porch, bend down to pick something up and hit your head on a window frame and the next, nothing seems to quite makes sense like it used to. it sucks. i hate it. but i'm doing all i can to work through it. my worst symptoms are dizziness and anxiety - i'm not sure which is worse. good times...
luckily, it hasn't hindered me too much in writing. i drafted THE OFFERING after the fact and i'm quite proud of that one! who knows...it's possible i wouldn't have thought of that story had i not hit my head. yes...let's focus on that.

5. i refer to my writing space as "my cave". it's really my living room, but when i'm writing, i turn down the lights, light candles, play music (A MUST!), and have a cup of coffee or tea. ambiance baby!

6. i collect anything vintage-y from jewelry, to typewriters, to knick-knacks, to housewares to clothing. i love it all! and i love it more if it's yellow!

7. my current music obsession is alexi murdoch (last month it was ingrid michaelson and the month before that it was of monsters and men)! enjoy the pretty...

i'm tagging jeannette smejkal
l.g. keltner and kelley lynn ...if they're up to it and haven't already participated :) BUT be sure to jump by their blogs anyway - you won't be sorry!

  1. Ha! Hubs and I did the veg thing for 10 years. Then one day I found a BK receipt in his wallet when I was borrowing some cash...yeah, he was having a secret affair with cheeseburgers, lol. So sorry to hear about your brain injury, yikes how scary.

    1. That's too funny!!! What made you switch (other than the affair of course...)?

And thanks. The whole thing is so damn ridiculous! Someday I'll laugh over it, right? Right?

  5. It was great getting to know you better! We are complete opposites in some ways (I had 2 c-sections and was ecstatic when the OB told me I was going to need one...). I love blogging for the way it brings together people who might not otherwise meet.

  6. I feel like I knew most of this stuff anyway, since we're dopplegangers and all. I mean, what doppleganger of mine WOULDN'T be a hippy mama?? :) Though my love affair is with green, not yellow so much.

Thanks for sharing, and thanks for tagging me! I find it inspiring that you can write such an awesome book even after dealing with head trauma. Scary, but incredible perseverance. I'm proud of you all the more now!

  7. Hi Jessika,
I found you through IRSG via Alex's site so nice to meet you.
Hippy, breast-feeding, co-sleeping, homeschooling, had to give up knitting cuz something had to go mom here.
I had to have a friend finish my last shawl because it was destined to be in a box for eternity while I occupy myself wrassling with words. Fie on Victorian Lace! Those women didn't have to juggle a gazillion things at home whilst trying to fit in knitting!! I need staff!
    Oops. Tangeant alert.
I'll pop back around later and see what's happening too. Nice to meet you.

    1. Hi Jill! So...is it safe to assume you don't sleep much? ;) Your shawl project sounds *amazing* and so do your friends, how nice! And yes, a full staff would be ideal...

Thanks for stopping by and nice to meet you too!

  8. Hi Jessika -

Thank you for sharing my breastfeeding portrait from my photographer's page, Sweetness & Light. This photo of me and my girls was also just published in Nurture Parenting Magazine in Australia. My post on it - http://doublethink.us.com/paala/2013/01/28/my-tandem-breastfeeding-portrait-in-nurture-natural-parenting-magazine/
Thanks for helping normalize breastfeeding and nursing past infancy!
