TRINKETS...KEEPSAKES...

the little things people decide to hold onto or collect and more importantly why.

for my mom it was an old wooden bookshelf her high school boyfriend made her. for me, typewriters. most people hold onto something whether it's one special thing or several things that evolve into a large collection. these keepsakes hold memories, pieces of ourselves, our pasts, maybe symbols of our futures.
in writing, i love trinkets. when my characters have little odds and ends they've collected and tucked away, it adds to their pesonalities, their quirks, and their lives and personal stories. because, while they're just material things, the reasons behind why they are special enough to keep is the true gem (and often worth digging for).
what types of trinkets do you hold onto? why (or why not)?

  1. Well, your bowls photo made me laugh because I do have a thing for bowls. In addition to bowls, I collect bracelets (sparkly iridescent vintage are my faves), sea glass and sand dollars. The last two have the most emotional meaning for me because they represent the ocean - and I could write all day about what the ocean means to me :)

    1. Big surprise, so do I... :p Especially vintage Pyrex. Very cool about the ocean.

  2. I love collecting small things from countries I've been to - small figurines or statues - and I love items with a crescent moon on them because my maiden name is Luna. I never thought about having my characters collect trinkets - cool idea!

  3. I work really hard at not being a hoarder, but I can't help it. I've got all sorts of trinkets and I never throw enough away. Most recently I've tried to keep my trinkets as photographs. They take up less room but are so, so special. And I agree, characters should have trinkets, too. Great post, Jessika!

    1. Thanks Dannie! Eventually I talked my mom (also a keeper of everything) into taking a photo of the book shelf...it was hard, but she finally took the leap and let go ;)

  4. Great photos - I love coloured glass and collected glass swizzle sticks for a while. These days however, it seems to be writing journals... So pretty!

  5. I'm totally surprise, but I have a door latch (on my front door) just like the one in the photo--the latch with the owl and moon at the top. In fact, mine has a lopsided thumb latch just like the one in the collect. It's a small world.

I collect tons of things. And I make special 'collections' to go with each story I write.

  6. Interesting! I...well, I like throwing things away. In fact, I'm almost OCD about my need to clear out "clutter" and throw stuff away. I guess the one item that I typically hold onto for a little while is a movie ticket, if it was a really good movie. I love film and movie-making, so I'll typically keep the tickets in my wallet until the ink starts to fade & then I'll throw them away.

Nice post and thanks for sharing!! : )

    1. I was waiting for 'one of you'...lol. Yeah, I'm somewhere in-between. I love purging our house of useless things, but definitely keep a handful of special items.

  7. I don't know that I have a single collection of any one thing, but I do love anything "retro". So fun. Trinkets are descriptive of personalities-- good angle with an MC.

  8. Symbolism! I love it. I think special objects and trinkets that mean a lot to characters are great. They often seem like a trinket at first, but become a metaphor for how the character has grown over time.

How will that character deal with losing it? Will they give it up freely? Or will they fight to the death to get it back?

    Thanks for sharing this :)

  9. Collections...so many collections here. My biggest collection is probably rocks - my friends bring them to me when they travel and I pick them up when I travel. Oh hell, I pick them up pretty much everywhere. I also collect fairy tale books and silver charms for my bracelet - I'm embarrassed to tell you how many are on there. There are so many more collections, but if I keep listing them, I'll never get to the other posts! ;)
